veryone thinks they\’ve got Southern California pegged – beautiful girls, quakes, traffic and sunshine. And for the most part, they\’re right on the money. But if you really want to get the So Cal experience, you gotta get off the hype and get a taste of Sprung Monkey! San Diego locals, Sprung Monkey, have been hittin\’ it hard for a decade. From the early days of selling CD\’s out of their trunk (over 30,000!) to their breakout success on MTV, Sprung has kept true to their sound – melodic, yet crunchy, poppy, yet kick ass. Through the years, Sprung have become a staple in the x-treme arena – appearing on the Van\’s Warped Tour, ESPN\’s X-Games and contributing tunes to countless surf, skate and snowboarding films. Sprung\’s last hit, \”Get \’Em Outta Here\” became an Alternative Anthem and appeared in the film Ten Things I Hate About You. As the song climbed the charts, (top ten Billboard Alternative) it also scored Sprung an appearance on The Late Show with Conan O\’Brian. Now, Sprung have taken their years of experience and mixed it with raw inspiration to create Get A Taste, their most recent release on Surfdog/Redline Entertainment. Produced by Jim Wirt (Incubus) and mixed by the omnipotent Chris Lord-Alge (practically everything you hear on the radio), the boys have chosen to come out of the gate with a more accessible feel on this album, while still maintaining their patented chunk and aggressive attack. Just like on their previous releases \”Swirl\” and \”Mr. Funnyface, \” you can\’t escape the hooks on this one… nor will you want to. With songs like \”Unexpected\” – a perfectly written, driving piece of upbeat swag and the first single \”What\’s That You Say,\” Sprung Monkey shows you that it can throw down some nicely crafted, melodic tunes – all served on their traditional bed of pure, unadulterated, alternative rock. You can rock, you can groove, you can chill – it\’s all good. (Courtesy of Myspace.com/sprungmonkey)

With approximately 50 shorts and features to choose from, this year’s FilmOut LGBT Festival is bound to pack the North Park Theatre.
For his ninth year with the festival, programmer Michael McQuiggan has once again filled the annual weeklong event with a wide array of narrative features, documentaries and foreign films that touch upon numerous genres and issues.
This year’s opening night presentation is “The Big Gay Musical,” and while I did not have a chance to see it ahead of time here are three movies destined to be crowd pleasers.
Jason Bushman’s “Hollywood Je T’aime” may have cribbed its title from “Paris, Je T’aime” and “New York, Je T’aime,” but it’s anything but another omnibus movie. Still smarting from a romantic breakup up, gay Parisian Eric Debets decides to buy a roundtrip ticket to America and try his luck with acting and romance, Hollywood style. The film is surprisingly charming with Debets acting as the glue that holds it all together. Unlike some of the other features I looked at, “Hollywood Je T’aime” is a cut above thanks to Alison Kelly’s sparkling cinematography and Phil Bartell’s crackerjack editing.
And if you think Debets bears more than a passing resemblance to Academy Award winner Adrian Brody, you are not alone. The filmmakers slip in a knowing reference that’s bound to get a big laugh when it screens on April 18 at 8 p.m.
Evgeny Afineevsky’s “Oy Vey! My Son Is Gay!” is a safe distance from Albert Brooks. Hell, it’s a safe distance from Neil Simon for that matter, but the film gets by largely on the charm of its cast. Lainie Kazan has gone from a sultry spread in Playboy to a career on stage and film that now finds her playing Yiddish mamas that would have made Gertrude Berg proud. Along with hubby Saul Rubinek, Kazan is doing her best to find her son a nice girl, but as the title indicates her gay baby boy ain’t interested. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the film is Carmen Electra. As the shikse centerfold Mom and Pop pray will be their daughter-in-law, Electra gives a funny and very natural performance. You’ll probably spend just as much time laughing at the film as with it, but I think with the title such as it is, that’s to be expected.
Wendy Jo Carlton’s “Hannah Free” is an unashamed tearjerker that benefits from Claudia Allen’s heartfelt script and a superb performance by “Cagney and Lacey” alum Sharon Gless. Hannah (Gless) and her lifelong companion Rachel (Ann Hagemann) grew up together in the same small Midwest town. Hannah grew to be a strong character who refuses to make excuses to polite society while Rachel became a strong, less vocal homemaker. The film, based on Allen’s stage play, intercuts between time frames to reveal how the characters maintained their love for each other in spite of all the odds against them.

Event Details:
Tony Bennett is an artist who moves the hearts and touches the souls of audiences. He’s not just the singer’s singer but also an international treasure honored by the United Nations with its Citizen of the World award, which aptly describes the scope of his accomplishments.
The son of a grocer and Italian-born immigrant, Anthony Dominick Benedetto was born on August 3, 1926, in the Astoria section of Queens, New York. He attended the High School of Industrial Arts in Manhattan, where he nurtured his dual passions, singing and painting. His boyhood idols included Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole, both big influences on Bennett’s easy, natural singing style. Tony sang while waiting tables as a teenager then performed with military bands throughout his overseas Army duty during World War II. After the war, the GI Bill enabled him to study vocal technique at the American Theatre Wing School. The first time he sang in a nightclub was 1946 when he sat in with trombonist Tyree Glenn at the Shangri-La in Astoria.
Tony’s big break came in 1949 when comedian Bob Hope noticed him working with Pearl Bailey in Greenwich Village. As he recalls, “Bob Hope came down to check out my act. He liked my singing so much that after the show he came back to see me in my dressing room and said, ‘Come on kid, you’re going to come to the Paramount and sing with me.’ But first he told me he didn’t care for my stage name (Joe Bari) and asked me what my real name was. I told him, ‘My name is Anthony Dominick Benedetto,’ and he said, ‘We’ll call you Tony Bennett.’ And that’s how it happened. A new Americanized name, the start of a wonderful career and a glorious adventure that has continued for sixty years.”
With worldwide record in the millions, and dozens of platinum and gold albums to his credit, Tony has received thirteen Grammy Awards as well as the prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. The MTV generation first took Tony Bennett to heart during his appearance with the Red Hot Chili Peppers on the 1993 MTV Video Awards. He appeared on MTV Unplugged and the resulting recording of the same name garnered him the top Grammy Award for Album of the Year. “Tony Bennett has not just bridged the generation gap,” observed The New York Times, “he has demolished it. He has solidly connected with a younger crowd weaned on rock. And there have been no compromises.” Bennett credits his eldest son and manager, Danny, for his success in capturing a whole new generation of listeners. (Courtesy of Palacasino.com/)

LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL DEBUTS AT CIVIC THEATRE
UCLA Sorority star Elle Woods doesn\’t take \”no\” for an answer. So when her boyfriend dumps her for someone more “serious,” Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books, and sets out to go where no Delta Nu has gone before: Harvard Law. Along the way, Elle proves that being true to yourself never goes out of style.
In its first year on Broadway, LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL earned seven 2007 Tony Award nominations, ten 2007 Drama Desk Award Nominations, a 2007 Outer Critics Circle Award and the chorus of the musical was honored by Actors’ Equity Association’s Advisory Committee on Chorus Affairs (ACCA) with the first ever ACCA Award. The musical also ranked in the top ten list of the most requested Ticketmaster “Arts & Theatre Events” for 2007. . LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL received three 2009 Touring Broadway Awards in New York City on May 4, 2009. The show won awards for Best New Musical, Best Production Design and Best Choreography of a Touring Production. The Awards, presented by The Broadway League, honor excellence in Touring Broadway. It is the only such national award.
Becky Gulsvig, the Elle understudy in the original Broadway cast, is Elle Woods in the tour. Fans of the MTV reality show “Legally Blonde The Musical: The Search for Elle Woods”, which premiered on June 2, 2008, will recognize a familiar face in the tour casting: Third runner-up and fan favorite Rhiannon Hansen appears as Elle’s best friend Margot. The reality show represented the musical’s second venture with MTV. In the fall of 2007, MTV aired LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL in its entirety to stellar ratings and was subsequently nominated for two 2007-2008 Daytime Emmy Awards.
Joining Ms. Gulsvig and Ms. Hansen are DB Bonds as Emmett, Natalie Joy Johnson as Paulette, Jeff McLean as Warner, Megan Lewis as Vivienne, Coleen Sexton as Brooke, Tony Award-winner Michael Rupert as Professor Callahan, Tiffany Engen as Serena, Lucia Spina as Enid and Candice Marie Woods as Pilar.
Also featured in the cast are: Barry Anderson, Sara Andreas, Kyle Brown, Liberty Cogen, Ven Daniel, Brooke Leigh Engen, Spencer Howard, Paul Jackel, Jason Kappus, Ashley Moniz, Kathleen Elizabeth Monteleone, Brian Patrick Murphy, CJay Hardy Philip, Jonathan Rayson, Constantine Rousouli Sara Sheperd and Josh Walden.
In an unprecedented partnership, on October 13, 2007, MTV premiered LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL in its entirety and reached over 12.5 million viewers, and ranked #1 in its time period among P12-34 across all of television. The special included a behind-the-scenes look at the musical and a Pink Carpet extravaganza hosted by the cast of “The Hills” live from the Palace Theatre in NYC. Following the success of \”Legally Blonde The Musical\”, MTV joined forces with the LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL team this time to search for a talented singer/actress/dancer to take over for the Tony Nominated Broadway star currently playing Elle Woods, Laura Bell Bundy, with \”Legally Blonde: The Search for Elle Woods.\”
The Original Broadway Cast Recording for LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL, was released on Ghostlight Records, an imprint of Sh-K-Boom Records, and captured the #1 slot on the Billboard Cast Album chart and charted at #86 on the Billboard Top 200. The album has continued its success, charting every week as one of the top-selling Broadway cast recordings and soared to the Top 10 albums (of any genre) on iTunes once the show premiered on MTV.
As on Broadway, Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell is the director and choreographer. Music and lyrics are by both Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, and the book is by Heather Hach. The production features scenic design by David Rockwell, costume design by San Diego’s own Gregg Barnes, lighting design by Kenneth Posner and Paul Miller, orchestrations by Christopher Jahnke and sound design by ACME Sound Partners. LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL is produced on Broadway by Hal Luftig, Fox Theatricals and Dori Berinstein, in association with MGM Onstage, Darcie Denkert and Dean Stolber. (Courtesy of Broadwaysd.com/)
